A man has appeared in Birmingham Crown Court today charged with the murder of Northfield gym owner Dave Hickman.

Boxer Thomas “Tommy” Powell 49, of Rochester Road, Northfield, is charged with murdering David Hickman – former owner of the Dark Arts Gym Northfield and Dark Arts Tattoo Rubery, during a fight outside the Northfield gym club on July 9th 2012.

Dave, 38, suffered serious head and spinal injuries after falling from a balcony at the gym and was left paralysed. He died 12 days later in hospital.

In court, prosecutors said that Mr Powell was angry after being banned from the gym by Mr Hickman. During a fight, it is alleged that Powell tipped Dave over the first floor balcony but fell with him, landing on top of him. Prosecutors further alleged that before leaving, Mr Powell and a second defendant, Mundeep Sahota, 22, of Kemberton Road, Weoley Castle, kicked Dave as he lay on the ground before leaving the scene. Mr Sahota is charged with affray.

Both accused men pleaded not guilty to their charges. The trial resumes tomorrow.
