Traci & Mike O’Shaughnessy from Rednal recently celebrated their wedding anniversary and treated themselves to a meal at TV chef Marco Pierre White’s restaurant in Birmingham’s stylish Cube building, along with a luxury night at Hotel Indigo.

Here, Traci reviews their experience!

We stayed for one evening (Friday 14th September 2012) in one of the suites.

It was our wedding anniversary and we had a table booked at MPW so decided to stay over and make it into a romantic break. We were not disappointed!

From the minute we arrived until the minute we left, everything was perfect. Front of house greeted us with smiles and congratulated us on our anniversary and went into great detail about all the facilities that were on offer – what a great start !

On checking in to our room we couldn’t have been happier – it was perfect: clean, spacious, the balcony views were stunning & the free mini-bar provided us with a lovely glass of wine on our balcony whilst we unpacked.

I was touched to receive a handwritten card congratulating us on our wedding anniversary from Suzanna Naughton (front of house manager) and I can say she went out of her way to make sure we had a fantastic stay – she is an asset to the hotel !

We made use of Laurent Perrier champagne bar and MPW Steakhouse, both of which were exemplary for food & customer service. Breakfast was at MPW in the morning and the views from the restaurant are worth the hotel rate alone – I urge everyone who stays to have a glass of bubbly in the evening and look out at the scenery- beautiful.

My one regret is that we didn’t visit the Spa – we just didn’t manage to fit it all in. I was slightly disappointed as I did try to book a treatment, as a gift from my husband (this is done from your room directly) but after several unanswered phone calls & a left message no-one got back to me so I never got to have a treatment. Maybe this is something that could be addressed as its a lost sale essentially? But this is my only small gripe !
The rest of my stay was pure bliss – the bed was the comfiest I have ever slept in and I didn’t want to leave it ! Except the call of MPW breakfast Omelette Arnold Bennett was too strong and I gave in!

We both truly had a wonderful stay and it was faultless except for my minor spa niggle.

I urge everyone to come and stay at the hotel. The rooms and location are amazing. Suzanna Naughton and the whole of the hotel staff and front of house team were excellent.

My husband & I can’t wait to return – although I think I am going to come again sooner with my friends for a girly treat !

My husband and I ate here in celebration of our wedding anniversary on Saturday 15th September 2012. It was absolutely delicious.

The views from the restaurant are amazing and the whole ambiance is very calm and relaxed. Our food was simply stunning everything tasted so fresh & clean.

We were welcome by very happy and attentive staff who remained that way throughout our visit. The table we were offered was at the window looking out over the scenery but it was very bright sunlight so declined and move further into the restaurant – every table has wonderful views so we were more than happy.

We were bought a glass of Prosecco while we pondered the menu – our waitress was very knowledgeable and provided great overviews of the dishes we asked her about.

I had asparagus & hollandaise sauce, hubby had goats cheese and beetroot salad. Both were substantial portions that filled the plate ! They tasted truly divine – so crisp and fresh and the hollandaise was rich creamy. The asparagus was seasoned well and the tip wilted to perfection. The goats cheese was exquisite – very subtle in flavour & the waitress pointed out that it was matured in ash not a rind which gives it that flavour – simply gorgeous.

For mains I had shepherd pie with peas , creamed cabbage & bacon – what can I say ? It was perfect , creamy mash, tomato meat ragu with fresh, crisp vegetables.

Hubby had the beefburger & chips cooked in beef dripping – he said it was delicious and the chips in dripping were so crisp but fluffy inside. Once again great portion sizes  – we both left some food we were so full !

However, not full enough to share a dessert! We had a Sherry trifle – it was a heavenly mix of black cherries, fruit compote, sponge & cream with lashings of sherry ! A nice boozy end to a gorgeous meal!

We didn’t order any wine with our meal but I saw the wine list and it was very impressive and not too expensive. Husband did have a bottle of Marco’s Governors cider, made with apples grown locally in Hereford – he really enjoyed it and it was crisp and clean and cut through the burger really well to refresh his palate.

All in all it was a fantastic meal and it exceeded my expectations.

I was all set up for small amounts of tasty food that would still leave me hungry and a pretentious atmosphere & staff. How wrong could I be !!!! We got a relaxed, happy environment with truly outstanding, tasty food that filled my plate – so much so I left some ! We left very happy & full – well worth the price, which I hasten to add is only the same as many chain restaurants in the mailbox !

Book your tables now !

Can’t wait to go back!

Added note: B31 Voices editors Sas & Marty Taylor also went to MPW Steakhouse recently for their wedding anniversary – food pics are in the gallery below, along with Traci’s. Yummmm! ;)
