The Longbridge Mini was part of a  spectacular floral display featuring iconic Birmingham images which has struck gold for the second time this summer, scooping a top award at the prestigious BBC Gardeners’ World Live show.

Fresh from a gold medal at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show, the ‘Best of Birmingham’ display has won gold again and was named ‘Best Exhibit in the Floral Marquee’ at the NEC show.

Birmingham City Council joined forces with Retail Birmingham to create the colourful display which features:

  • The floral Mini car previously displayed on the island at Longbridge
  • Birmingham Town Hall
  • The Bullring bull
  • Canal barge and lock gates
  • Selfridges

Leader of Birmingham City Council, Sir Albert Bore, said: “Working closely with our sponsors Retail Birmingham, our parks staff have once again produced a spectacularly colourful display and this latest award is richly deserved.

“The gold at Chelsea was a remarkable achievement. Our display was one of the star attractions and I’m delighted with the news that we’ve followed that success up with another top award.

“This year’s display features some iconic images of Birmingham and will no doubt attract visitors from across the UK.”

Jonathan Cheetham, Chair of Retail Birmingham and General Manager at The Pallasades shopping centre said: “Retail Birmingham is proud to be sponsoring such a spectacular display, which has already been recognised as a Gold winner at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We hope that the floral depiction of our extensive shopping offer, including over 1,000 stores across the city centre, to the entirely unique and historic Jewellery Quarter, encourages both national and international visitors to explore the city’s icons for themselves.

“The fantastic achievements at Gardeners’ World this week, in addition to the Gold win last month at Chelsea, are testament to the hard work from Birmingham’s talented Parks team. We look forward to welcoming the display back to the city later in the summer where it will be positioned in key areas of the city for all to enjoy during our busy summer of events.”

After Gardeners’ World Live, the double gold-winning display will form part of this summer’s Birmingham in Bloom display.

Congratulations to all involved, particularly the team at Cofton Nurseries!
