Andy Weekes of iCandi Apps

A local teacher has launched a stargazing app which has topped Apple App Store charts for the iPhone and iPad.

The Night Sky, described as “a magical new app that enables you to identify the stars, planets and even satellites you can see above”,  has been developed by Rubery based company, iCandi Apps. It has become the number one selling iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad app in the UK and New Zealand and is getting close in other countries around the world.

iCandi Apps was founded in 2008 by Andy Weekes who lives in Northfield and teaches at St Thomas Aquinas School in Kings Norton. He has already enjoyed some success with apps such as iLevel and Tweeterena and his apps have over half a million users around the world.  The company also develops custom apps for businesses. At the moment, Andy is working with around ten freelancers on various projects.

The company is permanently registered to the Avenue in Rubery and also has an office at Quayside Tower on Broad Street.

Andy was born and bred in Northfield, attending the Meadows Primary School, Colmers Secondary School and Cadbury College. He gained his BA Hons degree and PGCE at Leicester University before returning to the area to teach.

Number 1 in iPad App Store

Although iCandi Apps has been taking up more of his time, at the moment Andy still teaches part time at St Thomas Aquinas.

Andy said: “iCandi Apps started as a hobby back in late 2008, then as the hobby grew I formed the company. iCandi Apps went from strength to strength, and as a result when the time felt right I decided to go part time in my teaching job and focus on iCandi for the majority of my time. As a result of iCandi’s recent successes I will be moving to iCandi Apps full time as of July this year.”

We asked Andy how much he would like to hug Prof Cox, Dara O’ Brain and the BBC for the timely screening of this week’s Stargazing Live! He replied: “I will hug everyone involved in the Stargazing show until they are all bright red!! To think from from a full time teacher in September to focusing my efforts on the app store and getting a number 1 hit by January – thats less than 5 months and this has happened. I would say this is just the beginning…..”

B31 Voices would like to congratulate Andy and wish him every success for the future.
