Parents and supporters are not letting up in their fight to keep Charles House, respite home for disabled children, in West Heath open.

Mum Kimi Malin sent us the following:

My two sons Michael and David have been attending Charles house for several years. Michael and David are both autistic, have ADHD and learning difficulties. Michael also suffers from bowel problems and is incontinent.

Charles House has helped and given us tremendous support as a family and also made such a difference to Michael and David. Their staff are experienced and dedicated to all the children that attend there. Parents with children that have disabilities need people like the staff at Charles House and the parents need that break so that they can recharge their batteries and spend time with other members of the family.

I’ve been able to do this with my daughter Lauren as, without my respite care, Lauren would miss out because all of my time would be taken up with Michael and David. I can’t imagine being without my respite as I would imagine all other parents would feel the same.

The staff at Charles house are amazing people and they also don’t deserve this.

Please don’t take Charles house away from our chilren!!!!!!!!!!

And more from Jackie Wilkes:

I have a 14 year old daughter who has been having respite care at Charles House for the past year and I cannot praise the staff there enough!

I was struggling to cope on my own with my daughter who has a rare form of Cerebal Palsy, ADHD,  autistic spectrum disorder, learning disabilities and epilepsy. It took me three years to get her a place here and she adores going there.

The staff are superb and give the parents and children loads of support. I cannot thank them enough for the help they have given me. I can now have a bit of me time when she is away which gives me strenghth to cope with her when she comes home.

After years of struggling I now have a happy content child who loves her “little holidays away” and she then is happy and content when she comes home.

This service should not be cut it is invaluble to all the parents and children , I certainly don’t know what I would do without them.

Mother Julie Butcher spoke passionately about the threat to Charles House at a meeting of Birmingham Against the Cuts at the Council house on Thursday. You can see her speak at the beginning of the video below.
