It’s almost a year to the day since the tragic terrorist attacks which shook the US. 

Today, Birmingham Mail journalist Paul Suart remembers how a local firefighter immediately started a fundraising appeal for firefighters in New York and their families.

Paul Smith, 44 from Kings Norton launched the appeal and, thanks to the generosity of the people of Birmingham, managed to generate £240,000 in a matter of days for the Widows and Children’s Fund for the New York Fire Department. The key fundraising event was help in Northfield.
