Parents, grandparents and children took part in a passionate protest this morning to try to help save Merrishaw Day Nursery in West Heath.

The nursery is one of several council run Community Day Nurseries throughout the city facing closure as part of council budget cuts, including Mowbray CDN in Frankley which has already closed after 40 years serving the local community. Merrishaw’s latest Ofsted report gave it a grade of “outstanding”.

Supported by Northfield constituency MP Richard Burden and  Stirchley and Cotteridge against the Cuts the group carried out a protest walk with banners from the nursery to Hampstead House where local councillors were holding a surgery. Here they spoke to councillor Randal Brew, making clear their objection to the closure of all Birmingham’s community day nurseries, and delivered a petition.
