A serious accident near Frankley Services at approximately 11.30am closed the M5 between junctions 3 and 4 in both directions and it is likely to remain closed until at least 6pm. Two people were fatally injured in the accident. Severe delays around the general area are being experienced, including congestion on the M42 from its junction with the M5 to J3a and reports of heavy traffic and long delays on the A31 Bristol Road South around Longbridge & Northfield. Delays are expected to last through the Friday rush hour.

West Midlands Police gave details in a press release, urging witnesses to contact police:

At approximately 11.38hours on Friday 13th May 2011, an incident occurred on the southbound carriageway of the M5 motorway between junctions 3 and 4.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision where the driver and passenger of a Mercedes sadly received fatal injuries. The driver of the other vehicle has been taken to hospital with what is believed to be minor injuries.

The incident has caused the closure of the north and south bound carriageways in both directions. Police, Fire and ambulance services have attended assisted by officers from the Highways agency.

The incident is being investigated by officers of the Central Motorway Police Group. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Police on 0121-626-1285 and quote incident number 902 of 13/05/11.
