West Midlands Police press release:
POLICE in Northfield are hailing their latest crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour a huge success.
Operation Wonderland was originally set up at the start of December to combat a seasonal increase in crime and anti-social behaviour around Northfield Town centre over the festive period. However it has been such a success that officers have now extended the operation until the end of February.
The operation is a joint initiative between police and a number of partners including Birmingham Community Safety Partnership, Birmingham City Council, Northfield Town Centre Partnership and West Midlands Fire Service.
Throughout the operation, staff from the Northfield, Weoley and Longbridge neighbourhood policing teams have been working daily with their partners to hold a number of initiatives including offering crime prevention advice and Neighbourhood Watch information, property marking for bikes and electronic goods, and fire safety information for the home.
In addition to the above, officers have also been working with park wardens in Victoria Common Park to target anti-social behaviour; and environmental services who have been patrolling daily to clean up graffiti, litter and remove any fly posters. This is on top of the areas already successful retail radio scheme that allows local businesses and the police to communicate directly about any issues or offences in Northfield.
Finally, to ensure that people have had a safe and pleasant journey on the areas bus network, the Northfield neighbourhood team have been working together with National Express inspectors and the Safer Travel police team on a number of bus operations. These operations have been designed to provide reassurance to passengers, and to prevent and detect crime that occurs on the buses.
In a fantastic indication of the impact the operation has had figures show that :
In the four weeks leading up to operation Wonderland there were 168 calls in relation to incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in Northfield Town centre. In the four weeks after this dropped to 48 – a 70% decrease.
Sergeant Sarah Burton from the Northfield neighbourhood team said: “Operation Wonderland has been a huge success, not only have we dramatically reduced crime and anti-social behaviour in the area, we have also received some fantastic feedback from local people.
“With this in mind we have decided to continue our focus on the area and extend the operation until the end of February.
“I would also like to say that these successes would not be possible without the support of our partners and the local community, and therefore I would like to offer my personal thanks and look to continue this close working relationship throughout the year.”
