Birmingham City Council have issued a warning following a report of a telephone scam aimed at obtaining bank details from residents.

A woman was telephoned by a man calling himself “Derek”, who said that she was entitled to a £7000 council tax rebate and asked for her bank account details to deposit the money into.

BCC has stressed that it never telephones people about rebates and that, if any were due, it would be on their next council tax bill.

Cabinet Member for Fincance, Randall Brew told the BCC newsroom, “It is extremely sad and worrying that people are trying to take advantage of others in this way. If anyone has any concerns about the nature of a call regarding council tax they should contact the council immediately.”

If you experience anything similar or are worried about any telephone contact from the council tax office, you should contact them on their official number:  0121 303 1113
